Welcome to HOM©

Please read text below before downloading HOM Software

HOM is an educational software system developed by Michael A. Moses, Sridhar Seshadri, and Mikhail Yakirevich to be used in the Competitive Advantage from Operations program at the Stern School of Business of New York University.

HOM is designed to facilitate the analysis and solution of operating problems encountered by managers and entrepreneurs in manufacturing and service organizations.

There are seven HOM modules and one HOM case packet, a tutorial case plus the getting started help package. Each HOM module comes along with its own on-line help file, sample data files, and a technical manual. The technical manuals are  word documents. They can be modified and printed by the user.

Please visit the web site for HOM at: http://www.stern.nyu.edu/HOM. A downloadable version can be obtained from the site. The user name and ID required to download HOM are given on page 2. Please note as a Stern student that you do NOT have to register to download HOM.

HOM is copyrighted and meant for your own exclusive use. Any commercial use, resale, or free distribution of the HOM software are prohibited.

Please follow the steps given below in order to download a copy of HOM for your personal use.

                1. Go to http://www.stern.nyu.edu/HOM

                2. Use the scroll bar on the left hand side of the screen to reveal the menu item, "Download."

·         HOM 3.0 Manuals

Download Individual HOM Components (Including Manuals)

·         Aggregate Planning
·         Quality Management

Download Case Studies and Tutorial (tutorial case has to be downloaded from here)

·         Case Studies
·         Tutorial (Newport Case Study)

6. Copy all or some of the modules you want to blank diskettes. You will need four blank diskettes to copy all the modules.

In order to install a HOM module on your home computer (please do not attempt to install in the PC labs at Stern), follow the steps given below.

1.       Each HOM module has to be installed separately. A module will require from 5 to 14 mb of hard disk space. Please ensure that there is adequate disk space (14 mb) available before proceeding to step 2.

2.   Use either the “My Computer” icon in Windows 95 (or NT) or the File Manager in Windows       3.x, to locate the EXE file that you downloaded.

3.    Double click upon the file name or icon in Windows 3.x or Windows 95 respectively. Follow       the instructions that you will see upon your screen.

4.    The modules can be installed any number of times from the same copy of the EXE file. In        case, you do not wish to keep a copy of the manual permanently, you can delete it after the      installation, and re-install it if the need arises in the future.

5.    We strongly recommend that you read the getting started help file. This file is called

getstart.hlp. It can be read by going to Start --> Programs --> Hom --> Getting Started.

To Run a HOM module on your home PC, use Start --> Programs --> Hom --> Name of Module. The procedure for running HOM in the Stern labs is different and is given below.
How to Run HOM in Stern labs or from the podium.

1. Use the following sequence of choices to get to a HOM module.

Start

        Programs

                Course Applications

                        Operations Management

                                HOM

2.       You will then see the following choices.

Please read Getting Started if you are a first time user. The data file should be preferably located in your home directory (on the H: drive).

Menu Choices

·         Aggregate Planning
·         Forecasting
·         Getting Started
·         Inventory Management
·         Process Analysis
·         Project Management
·         Quality Management
·         Waiting Line Management

3.       If your data file is on your disk, you should preferably save it (from within HOM) in your home directory before proceeding with your analysis. This is a precautionary step to avoid running out of space on your disk.

4. When the network usage is heavy, HOM might take a few minutes to start up. The delay is due to the fact that the server copies several files to the local machine before invoking the module requested by the user. The good aspect of this method is that once the files have been copied, HOM runs on a stand alone basis from the local machine.
